"Green" Your Summer with Water Conservation Tips

Want to make your home more eco-friendly this summer?  Start with your plumbing system!  By reducing your water waste you can save money and reduce your impact on the environment around you.  Here are a few tips to make your plumbing system more water-efficient this summer.

Water Conservation Tips:

  • Change Your Watering Times - The best time to water your lawn is in the morning and evening.  During the peak hours of the day, the water will evaporate before it gets a chance to get absorbed by your plants.  Watering in the morning or evening hours will help you water more efficiently.
  • Upgrade to Water-Efficient Fixtures - Many new shower heads and faucets are more water-efficient than older models.
  • Fix Leaks Early On - It's important to fix leaking pipes early on.  letting a leak go unfixed results in unnecessary water waste and can cause problems in your plumbing system.
  • Check Your Hose Bibs - Outdoor hoses get a lot of use during the summer months.  Check for leaks to make sure that your system is working efficiently.

Budget Remodeling Tips:

  • Update Your Lighting - Replacing the light fixtures in your bathroom can change the entire mood of the space. It can brighten a bathroom and create a more modern look and feel.

How to Prevent Summer Plumbing Problems

Between washing clothes, hosting BBQs, and watering our lawns, we tend to use more water during the warmer months.  These plumbing tips will help you prevent problems this summer!

Prevention Tips:

  • Be Careful with Your Disposal - Watch what you are putting down your garbage disposal this summer.  Many summer BBQ foods like corn husks, macaroni salad, and other fibrous foods can clog your disposal.
  • Watch What You Flush - If you are having guests over for the 4th of July, remind them to be mindful of what they flush down the toilet!  Another other than waste and toilet paper can clog your drain line.
  • Check Your Sprinklers - Check your lawn sprinklers to make sure that they are working correctly.  After the long winter that we had, they might have undergone some damage.

How to Prevent Household Clogs

A slow draining sink or bathtub can be frustrating.  Fortunately, there are a few ways to prevent clogged drains this summer!

How to Prevent Clogs:
  • Clean Beach Sand Off Outside - Summer months are popular for heading down to the beach - just make sure that you wash off when you're there.  Sand can clog your drains.
  • Keep Sink Strainers in Place -As you wash your summer fruits and vegetables, keep your sink strainers in place!  This will help keep food out of your drains and keep them running smoothly.
  • Throw Away Grease - Make sure you throw away any grease.  Although it may look like a liquid, grease can clog your drains when it cools and hardens.

Why Should You Remodel Your Bathroom?

Top Reasons to Remodel:

  • You Need More Space - One of the most common reasons homeowners want to remodel their bathroom is that they need more space.  Many older homes have bathrooms that are smaller than we are typically comfortable with.
  • The Design is Outdated - Older bathrooms can make your home look and feel outdated.  Even a few simple bathroom remodeling updates can make your bathroom look brand new.
  • Need Updated Fixtures - Older shower fixtures and faucets can make your bathroom look older than it is.  With a few simple updates, you can completely change the look of your bathroom.  Many new fixtures even add water efficiency to your bathroom, saving you and your family money in the long run.

How to Turn on Your Hose Bib

Are you ready to get your yard in shape for summer?  These tips from BrightNest will help you turn the water to your outdoor hose bib!

Steps to Turning on Your Hose Bib:

  1. First, tighten the wheel/valve on the spigot.
  2. Then, locate the water shutoff valve.  This valve is usually located somewhere inside of your house - whether it be the basement, crawl space or utility room.
  3. Open your water valve and allow water to flow to the spigot outside of your home.
  4. Once the valve is open, tighten the bleeder valve.  This will help prevent leaks in the spring.
  5. Now you can head outside and turn on the spigot to make sure it is working properly before you connect the garden hose.
  6. Lastly, connect the garden hose and you're ready to water your lawn, flowers, and vegetable garden!
If you notice that your hose bib is leaking or you having difficulty turning on your outdoor hose this spring, contact our office.  It has been a cold winter and it is possible that there is a crack in your plumbing pipes.  Our professional plumbing technicians can take a look at your hose bib and help you determine the reason behind your plumbing problem.  Call 585-216-3058 to schedule an appointment with one of our professional plumbing technicians.
