Cleaning Tips for Cold & Flu Season

Cleaning is no one's favorite chore.  However, keeping your home clean can help keep the doctor away as we head into cold and flu season.  These tips will help keep your home spotless and germ-free.

Cleaning Tips for Cold & Flu Season:

  • Disinfect Faucet Handles - You wash your hands to keep them clean, but you touch the faucet handle before you are able to wash them off.  Disinfect your faucet handles too during your cleaning routines.
  • Wash Your Pillow Case - You should wash your pillow case about once a week to help get rid of any germs that might have gotten onto your pillow.
  • Keep Humidifiers Clean - Humidifiers help make breathing easy, but they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.  Be sure to clean your humidifier regularly.
  • Wipe Down Door Handles - Your bathroom door handle, the door to your home, and your bedroom doors should be wiped down and disinfected.
  • Kitchen Cabinet Handles - Cabinet handles are another part of your home that is touched often.  Keep cabinet handles clean to help keep germs out of the kitchen.
  • Toilet Flushers - This one may seem obvious, but you should keep your toilet handle clean to prevent germs from spreading.  We don't wash our hands until after the toilet is flushed.

Plumbing Tips for the First Day of Fall

Happy Fall!  We love sweater season, changing leaves and pumpkin spice everything.  Now that the weather is cooling down, it's also time to bring back your focus to caring for the home.  These tips will help you prep your plumbing system for the cool autumn weather.

Fall Plumbing Tips:

  • Flush Your Water Heater - Water heaters work harder during the colder months.  Now is the time to perform regular water heater maintenance and prep your water heater before the cool weather hits.  Flushing your water heater helps your system last longer and helps it work more efficiently.
  • Keep Gutters Clear - We love to see the changing leaves in the Fall.  Unfortunately while the leaves look beautiful, they can also clog your gutters when they fall down.  Make sure that you clear any leaves out of your gutters so that rain water can drain away from your home.
  • Check Your Sump Pump - Prep your home for any Fall rains by checking to make sure that your sump pump is working efficiently.  This will help prevent flooding!
  • Insulate Exposed Pipes - Do you have any exposed pipes in your walls, basement or attic?  The Fall is the perfect season make sure that exposed pipes are well insulated before the cold weather hits.  You don't want your plumbing pipes to freeze when the temperature drops.

Have questions about how to prep your home for the fall?  Our professional technicians will help you with all of your plumbing repair, replacement, and care needs.

How to Fight Common Household Odors

No one wants to come home to kitchen filled with funky smells.  Fortunately, there are ways to get rid of these common odors.  These tips will help keep your home smelling fresh.

Odor Control Tips:

  • Wipe Down Your Fridge - A smelly refrigerator is something no one wants to come home to after a long day at work.  Clean out your fridge this weekend.  Wipe down the shelves and put baking soda in your fridge to absorb foul odors.
  • Clean Your Microwave - Microwaves are subject to a lot of abuse.  Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the lemon juice into a small bowl of water.  place the lemon water in the microwave for five minutes to help freshen up the microwave and get rid of cooking odors.
  • Add Vinegar to Your Dishwasher -Vinegar and baking soda are great deodorizers.  Fill a measuring cup up halfway and place it on the top rack of your dishwasher.  Then, you can let the dishwasher run (otherwise empty) for a cycle.
  • Sanitize Your Sponges - You use your sponges to keep your dishes clean, but the sponge itself can be another source of smell after a while.  Soak your sponge in a mixture of water and lemon juice or vinegar.  Then, toss it in the microwave to deodorize.

What to Do After Dropping Your Cell Phone in the Toilet

There is nothing more frustrating than accidentally dropping your cell phone into the toilet.  If this happens - don't panic!  There are a few ways to recover your phone.

Steps to Take:

  1. Remove Your Phone - Take your phone out of the toilet as soon as possible.
  2. Turn It Off - Leaving your phone on can cause it to short circuit.  Turn your phone off and assume it is waterlogged, whether or not the phone is still on.
  3. Inspect Your Phone - Lay your phone on paper towels or soft cloths.  Remove the battery cover to find out if the phone is water damaged.  Check the corner near the batter.  If there is a white square or circle, your phone is not water damaged.  If the square is pink or red, your phone has water damage.
  4. Save Your SIM - Your SIM card is the part of your phone that stores all of your information - including your photos, contacts, and other valuable data.  Take the card and pat it dry.
  5. Dry Your Phone - Now you need to remove the water from your phone.  One of the most common ways to do this is to use a substance that has a high affinity for moisture - like rice!  Put your phone in a bowl of rice and move it's position every hour to help remove all of the water.
  6. Test Your Phone - After you have waited at least 24 hours for your phone to dry, you can put the battery back into your phone and attempt to turn it on.

Party Tips for Your Labor Day Celebration

Happy Labor Day!  We hope you enjoy spending time off today as we appreciate those who work hard every day.  If you plan on spending time with friends and family BBQing and celebrating as we approach the end of summer, here are a few tips to make sure your Labor Day celebration goes smoothly.

Labor Day Party Tips:

  • Plan Your BBQ - Take the time to plan how much food you will need for your guests!  This will help prevent tons of leftovers.
  • Use Your Disposal Carefully - Garbage disposals are a great tool.  They help keep bits of food out of your plumbing!  However, be careful what you decide to put down your disposal.  Many BBQ foods like potato salad, corn, and bones from meats can damage your disposal blades.
  • Remind Guests to Drive Safely - Labor Day weekend is a big travel holiday.  If you have guests coming from a long distance, remind them to drive safely and carefully!
  • Watch What You Flush -When having guests over (especially small children), things can get flushed that aren't supposed to.  Make sure that only toilet paper and waste is being flushed down your toilet today.
If you experience any plumbing problems today, give us a call!  Our professional plumbing technicians will help you correct your home plumbing problems.
