The Truth About Earth Loops

There are three basic geothermal energy sources. A closed-loop system circulated a water-based solution through a "loop system" of underground pipes. Closed-loop systems can be installed horizontally, vertically, or in a pond.

Horizontal Loops: This system is often used when there is adequate land surface available. Depending on your geothermal system's needs, pipes are placed in trenches of various lengths.

Vertical Loops: This is the ideal choice for a geothermal heat pump when there is limited land surface. Small diameter holes are drilled from 100-400 feet deep.

Lake Loops: This is a economical system to install. When a large body of water is available for use, coils of pipe are placed at the bottom of the pond or lake to capture geothermal energy.

Whether the system is open or closed, heat is transferred to or from the structure regardless of the outdoor temperature- thus providing comfort year round!
