Fall Plumbing Checklist

Tomorrow is the first day of fall!  Now that the weather is getting cooler, it's the perfect time to perform some simple household plumbing maintenance.  Here are a few ways to keep your plumbing system in shape this fall.

Fall Maintenance Tips:

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes - Any outdoor or exposed plumbing pipes should be insulated before the cooler weather. hits.  Wrap your pipes with electrical heating tape and foam pipe insulation.
  • Turn Off Water - Any outdoor faucets you have should be shut off.  Remove all garden hoses and drain any outdoor water fixtures, including automatic sprinkler systems.
  • Check Septic/Sewer System - Fall is the perfect time to check your septic and sewer system.  Since roots don't grow as much during colder months, it's the perfect time for maintenance.
  • Check for Leaks - Leaky faucets, pipes, and toilets should be repaired as soon as possible.  Check to make sure there are no leaks and that your toilets are flushing properly.
  • Flush Your Water Heater -  Overtime, mineral deposits may cause the drain valve to clog.  Flushing your water heater will help remove any sediment buildup.
  • Clean Rain Gutters - The leaves haven't started to fall just yet, but when they do, make sure that you keep your gutters clear.  Leaves and debris can dam up rainwater and cause water damage.
