"Green" Your Summer with Water Conservation Tips

Want to make your home more eco-friendly this summer?  Start with your plumbing system!  By reducing your water waste you can save money and reduce your impact on the environment around you.  Here are a few tips to make your plumbing system more water-efficient this summer.

Water Conservation Tips:

  • Change Your Watering Times - The best time to water your lawn is in the morning and evening.  During the peak hours of the day, the water will evaporate before it gets a chance to get absorbed by your plants.  Watering in the morning or evening hours will help you water more efficiently.
  • Upgrade to Water-Efficient Fixtures - Many new shower heads and faucets are more water-efficient than older models.
  • Fix Leaks Early On - It's important to fix leaking pipes early on.  letting a leak go unfixed results in unnecessary water waste and can cause problems in your plumbing system.
  • Check Your Hose Bibs - Outdoor hoses get a lot of use during the summer months.  Check for leaks to make sure that your system is working efficiently.

How to Prevent Summer Plumbing Problems

Between washing clothes, hosting BBQs, and watering our lawns, we tend to use more water during the warmer months.  These plumbing tips will help you prevent problems this summer!

Prevention Tips:

  • Be Careful with Your Disposal - Watch what you are putting down your garbage disposal this summer.  Many summer BBQ foods like corn husks, macaroni salad, and other fibrous foods can clog your disposal.
  • Watch What You Flush - If you are having guests over for the 4th of July, remind them to be mindful of what they flush down the toilet!  Another other than waste and toilet paper can clog your drain line.
  • Check Your Sprinklers - Check your lawn sprinklers to make sure that they are working correctly.  After the long winter that we had, they might have undergone some damage.
