Fall Plumbing Checklist

Tomorrow is the first day of fall!  Now that the weather is getting cooler, it's the perfect time to perform some simple household plumbing maintenance.  Here are a few ways to keep your plumbing system in shape this fall.

Fall Maintenance Tips:

  • Insulate Exposed Pipes - Any outdoor or exposed plumbing pipes should be insulated before the cooler weather. hits.  Wrap your pipes with electrical heating tape and foam pipe insulation.
  • Turn Off Water - Any outdoor faucets you have should be shut off.  Remove all garden hoses and drain any outdoor water fixtures, including automatic sprinkler systems.
  • Check Septic/Sewer System - Fall is the perfect time to check your septic and sewer system.  Since roots don't grow as much during colder months, it's the perfect time for maintenance.
  • Check for Leaks - Leaky faucets, pipes, and toilets should be repaired as soon as possible.  Check to make sure there are no leaks and that your toilets are flushing properly.
  • Flush Your Water Heater -  Overtime, mineral deposits may cause the drain valve to clog.  Flushing your water heater will help remove any sediment buildup.
  • Clean Rain Gutters - The leaves haven't started to fall just yet, but when they do, make sure that you keep your gutters clear.  Leaves and debris can dam up rainwater and cause water damage.

Does Your Geothermal System Require Maintenance?

Autumn weather is just around the corner.  Is your home ready for the cooler temperatures?  Geothermal systems are among the most efficient heat pump choices.  They save you money on your utility costs and are an environmentally conscious heating option.

Geothermal heat pumps require minimal maintenance.  Since all of the parts are reliable and located inside of your home, they have a longer life expectancy than other heating and cooling options. They aren't subject to the same wear-and-tear!

Keeping your geothermal system clean will help it work at maximum efficiency throughout the year. This fall, there are a few simple preventative steps you can take to keep your heat pump clean and working smoothly.

Simple Maintenance Tips:
  • Clean Your Air Filter - Check to see if your air filter is dirty.  If your filter is washable, you can clean it by hand.  If your filter is disposable, change it out for a new, high efficiency filter.
  • Check Your Coils - Dirty coils can make your system work harder than it has to.
  • Clean the Heat Exchanger (open loop systems only)
Contact our office with any questions you have about your geothermal heat pump!  You can also learn more about geothermal systems here.

"AP Plumbing just completed a very big project for us over two days. We have been very impressed with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the AP Plumbing staff. They have the equipment and know how to use it. What we liked best about working with Don Dugan and his team - Brian, Jay, and Dennis; was their problem-solving attitude and their perseverance on the job. The crew were responsive to our questions and worked with us on identifying the best, cost effective solutions. They shared information and kept us informed as the work progressed.  In addition, the office staff members are always polite and helpful in communications. We look forward to working with AP Plumbing in the future." - Fred Dowaliby & Bernadette Skobjak

Bathroom Remodeling Tips and Tricks

Is your bathroom outdated?  It might be time for a remodel that better fits your family’s needs.  Here are a few tips and tricks to consider before you decide on a design.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips:
  • Tile Floors – Porcelain or glazed tiles are easy to care for, while textured surfaces or matte finishes create a nonslip surface.  These are both great options, but depending on your individual needs, you may favor one over the other.
  • Space – If you are looking to create a half bath, look for an area that is 3 to 4 feet wide and 6 to 8 feet long.  Anything smaller will feel crowded.
  • Sink Style – Pedestal sinks are common in small bathrooms, but they don’t offer any storage options.  Vanities with sinks take up most of the room, but offer both storage and counter top space.
  • Hot Water – Adding additional features to your bathroom like a soaker tub or multi-head shower will use more hot water than you are used to.  You may need to upgrade your water heater, depending on your family’s hot water consumption.
  • Accessibility – Certain permanent features should be added early on.  Consider a wider doorway, lower sink height, a barrier free shower, and whether or not you will want to add grab bars to your shower.
Read this article for more tips on what you should consider before remodeling your bath.  You can also contact our remodeling experts for a free in-home consultation!  Call 585-216-3058 to contact AP Plumbing.
