Beat the Winter Blues with These Bathroom Fixes

Suffering from the winter blues?

Cold temperatures and short days leave us spending more time indoors during the winter months.  Fortunately, there are ways to beat the winter blues and brighten up your space - even on cold, dark days.

Here are a few simple ways to update your bathroom this winter.

Winter Bathroom Remodeling Ideas:

  • Upgrade to Shower Doors - Now that the days are shorter, bathroom lighting can be hard to come by.  Adding shower glass doors to your bathroom can brighten up your space.  Unlike shower curtains, glass allows light to pass through your space, making it appear bigger and brighter.
  • Add Additional Lighting - Does your bathroom seem dim?  Adding more lighting options can help make getting ready on a dark winter morning a little bit easier.
  • Add New Fixtures - New faucet and shower head fixtures can make your bathroom feel new again.
  • Add a Vanity Mirror - Mirrors naturally reflect light and make your bathroom space appear larger than it is.  They're a great way to add light to a dark space.

If you're bathroom tub is in need of a serious upgrade - don't forget to enter our ugliest tub contest!  Click here for complete rules.

Plumbing FAQs

Have a question about your plumbing system?  You're not alone.  Take a look at a few of the most frequently asked plumbing questions.

Plumbing FAQs:

What Causes Clogged Drains?
Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing problems that homeowners face.  Most bathroom clogs are due to hair and soap clogging the drain pipes.  When this accumulates over time, it can keep the water from going down the drain.  Kitchen sinks are often clogged by oil and grease.  If you want to prevent these clogs, try to scrape food dishes before washing them in the sink.  Even small amounts of oil can clog your drain over time!

How Do I Turn Off Water to My House?
All of the water in your home is connected to your main water shut off valve.  It is likely that you will find this valve in your basement or crawl space below your house.

Why Should You Drain Your Water Heater?
Your water heater is an often overlooked part of your home, so how often do you need to perform maintenance on it?  You should drain your water heater once a year to improve the overall energy efficiency of your system.  Read more about when to drain your water heater here.

Why Should I Stay Away From Liquid Drain Cleaners?
Slow draining sinks can be frustrating, but liquid drain cleaners can damage your plumbing.  You should always give a professional plumber a call before purchasing a liquid drain cleaner.  Read more about why here.

How Can I Remodel On a Budget?
Bathroom and kitchen remodeling doesn't have to break the bank.  By updating your fixtures, keeping your plumbing in the same locations, and choosing decorations wisely, you can significantly reduce the cost of your remodel.  Read more about how to remodel on a budget here and give us a call for a consultation.  We'll always give you an estimate in writing for you to approve before we begin any work!

If you run into any of these common plumbing problems - or you don't see your plumbing problem above, give us a call!  Our technicians are here around the clock to help you with all of your plumbing needs.

How to Avoid Frozen Pipes

Are you recovering from yesterday's heavy snow fall?

Although the snow may have stopped falling, it's still important to protect our homes from the cold winter temperatures.  As the temperature drops, the water in your pipes can freeze.  Since water expands, this can cause your pipes to break.

These tips will help you avoid frozen pipes and keep hot water running through your home tonight.

How to Avoid Frozen Pipes:

  • Keep Your Garage Closed - Keep your garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in your garage.  If your garage isn't heated, it's important to keep your garage as warm as you can.
  • Open Cabinet Doors - On cold nights, allow air to circulate around the plumbing under your kitchen and bathroom sinks.  Remember to keep any harmful cleaners or chemicals out-of-reach first if you have small children.
  • Don't Turn Down Your Thermostat - By temporarily suspending your heat during the night, you'll save on your heating bills, but you can also end up with a costly pipe repair job is your plumbing freezes and bursts.
  • Keep the Heat On While Away - If you're planning a weekend getaway from the snow, leave your heat on.  Set your temperature no lower than 55 degrees so that your plumbing doesn't freeze.

Remember to drive safely and take it easy when shoveling yourself out of the house.  Remember to contact our office if you run into any plumbing problems today.  You can call 585-216-3058 to contact our office or visit our website to learn more about the plumbing and remodeling services that we offer to the Rochester area.

How to Keep Your Water Heating Bill Low

Utility bills can add up at the end of the month.  Fortunately, with a few simple changes to your home routines and fixtures, you can save money on your water heating bill.

Here are a few tips to help you save next month!

How to Save:

  • Make the Upgrade - New water heaters are more energy-efficient than older models.  If your water heater is over 10 years old, you should upgrade to a newer, more efficient appliance.  This is a great way to accumulate long-term savings.
  • Take Showers -While baths can be relaxing, showers are more energy-efficient.  Even when a bath is filled with only a few inches of water, it is still less efficient than a short shower.
  • Fix Leaky Faucets - Leaky faucets and pipes can add up.  A leak of one drip per second can cost $1 per month, according to the Department of Energy. Although this may not seem like much, this cost can add up over time.
  • Install Low-Flow Fixtures - New shower heads and faucets flow and lower rates, saving you money.  As an added bonus, a new fixture can give your bathroom an updated look and feel.
If you have any questions about your home water heater or you are due for an upgrade, contact our office.  The experienced technicians at AP Plumbing are here for all of your home water heater needs!

5 Plumbing Upgrades to Make This Winter

Cold winter weather is the perfect excuse for focusing on indoor home improvement projects.  This weekend, you might want to consider making a few updates to your home plumbing system!

Here are a few plumbing upgrades you should make this winter.

5 Plumbing Upgrades:
  1. Tankless Water Heaters - If your water heater is over 10 years old, it's likely that you'll be due for a replacement soon.  Older water heaters tend to break down more frequently and work less efficiently.  The benefit of choosing a tankless water heater for your upgrade is that they take up less space!  This will leave you with more room in your basement - and often a lower utility bill.  Tankless water heaters heat water as it is needed.  This means that you won't waste money keeping unused water warm.
  2. Efficient Shower Heads - An easy way to improve the functionality of your bathroom and give it a new look and feel is by updating your shower head.  Newer shower head models are more efficient, and come with spa-like settings that can make your bathroom more luxurious!
  3. Upgrade Your Faucet Fixtures - Want to give your bathroom a new look for less?  Update your faucet fixtures!  This simple fix can really give your space an updated and modern feel.
  4. Update Your Bathtub - An old bathtub can be an eyesore.  Updating your bathtub or upgrading a walk-in shower can be the perfect solution for your bathroom.  It's also perfect for older couples who are looking to age-in-place!
  5. Opt for a Full Remodel - If your bathroom is in need of an overhaul, it might be time for a full bathroom remodel.  We offer bathroom remodeling services that will help you with everything from plumbing installations to design.

How to Insulate Your Plumbing Pipes

When water freezes - it expands.

This means that on cold days like today, your plumbing pipes are at risk!  Frozen pipes can expand and burst, leading to a messy cleanup for Rochester homeowners.  Not only will you need to replace your cracked pipes, you might also be left with a flooding mess.  Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this!

By insulating exposed pipes in your home (in your basement, attic, and under your cabinets), you can help create a barrier between your plumbing pipes and the cold winter air.

How to Insulate Your Plumbing:

  1. Protect your plumbing with foam-rubber pipe insulation.  Slip the foam-rubber insulation over your exposed pipes.
  2. Peel away any backing strips and press the adhesive surfaces together to insulate your pipes.
  3. Cut the foam rubber insulation to size at the corner joints and secure with foam tape.
  4. Insulate the areas around your plumbing. Seal any air leaks, holes and cracks around the home with caulking or weatherstripping.
If your run into any problems with your home plumbing this winter or you're not sure how to insulate your pipes through the DIY route, contact our office.  Our plumbing technicians can help make sure that your plumbing system is protected all winter long.

How to Keep Your Bathroom Clean and Organized for the New Year

Everyone wants to start the year off with a clean slate - why not start (and end) each day off fresh too?  With a clean and organized bathroom, you can ease into your day without the chaos of looking for a lost hairbrush.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your bathroom organized and clean in 2016.

Bathroom Tips:

  • Go Through Your Medicine Cabinet - When was the last time you really went through your medicine cabinet?  It's time to get rid of outdated medicines and keep your medicine cabinet clean and organized with products that are useful to you in the new year.
  • Keep Hair Products Under Control - Hair products can take up a lot of space int he bathroom.  Keep your styling routine organized by storing all of your products in a plastic tub under the sink.  If you haven't used a product recently, it might be time to toss it!
  • Squeegee Often - After a long shower, water will sit on your shower curtain or shower glass doors.  This can lead to mold, mildew and hard water stains.  Stay on top of your cleaning routine by simply using a squeegee to wipe down your shower after each use.  This will help keep your bathroom clean and cut down on cleaning time when you do your bathroom cleaning each week.
  • Clean Your Grout - Grout is porous and can absorb oils from any products you use in the bathtub.  This includes shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.  Keep your shower tiles clean by cleaning the grout with a mixture of 10 parts water to 1 part bleach.  Just be sure to remove the bleach solution after you're done cleaning
  • Set a Schedule - Put a plan in place for 2016.  Once a month (or every other month) you should give your bathroom a thorough clean.  Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar to help keep your pipes clear of grease, oil and hair.
Check out this Martha Stewart article for more information on how to clean your bathroom.  If you're looking to really give your bathroom and overhaul this year with a remodel, give our office a call.  Our professionals will help you decide on the right bathroom design for your home needs.   Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office or visit our website to learn more about the plumbing and remodeling services that we offer to the Rochester area.

  • Remodel Your Outdated Bathroom - Your bathroom is one of the most utilized (and under appreciated) rooms in your home. If your bathroom is outdated, consider a remodel to revamp your space.

Last Minute Holiday Plumbing Tips

Extra holiday guests can place extra strain on your plumbing system.  As you get ready to celebrate, remember to take a few extra steps to keep your plumbing in good condition through the weekend and the New Year.

These plumbing tips will help your holiday celebrations go smoothly this year.

Plumbing Tips:

  • Take Care of Your Garbage Disposal - Don't dump grease don't the drain!  As you prep for your holiday feast, make sure that you properly dispose of any leftover grease.  If grease does go down your drain, be sure to let the water run to help make sure that it doesn't stick to the sides of the pipes.  If you run into any drain clogging problems, give us a call!
  • Keep A Strainer In Your Drain - Before you wash any dishes, make sure that you have a strainer in your sink.  This helps catch any food particles before they get washed down your drain.
  • Stock Up On Toilet Paper - If you're going to be having a lot of guests over for the holidays, make sure that you don't run out of toilet paper!  Make sure that extra toilet paper rolls are visible to guests.  Other products can clog your drains if they get accidentally flushed by a guest.

If you do run into any plumbing problems this weekend, give our office a call.  Our expert plumbing technicians are here to help you with all of your emergency repair needs.

Bathroom Remodeling Trends for the New Year

Is your bathroom due for a remodel?

Whether your bathroom is old and outdated or you're simply looking to give your space a new look, our bathroom remodeling experts are here to help.

As you start to think about your design plans and what style will work best for your space, here are a few remodeling trends to look out for in the New Year.

Bathroom Remodeling Trends for 2016:

  • Glass Shower Doors - One of the best ways to improve the appearance and functionality of your bathroom is by upgrading from shower curtains to shower doors.  Not only are they easier to clean, but shower doors can also open up your space and make it appear bigger.  Shower glass lets in light, while still allowing privacy.  Choose from a number of shower glass designs that offer obscurity and beauty.
  • Walk-In Tubs or Showers - With so many parents looking to age in place, walk in tubs and showers are growing in popularity.  Not only are they easier to access, but because they are so desirable, they can also improve the resale value of your home.
  • Metallics - A simple hardware update is a great way to update the appearance of your bathroom.  Metal faucets, handles, and shower heads in brass and copper tones are becoming popular in the bathroom.
  • Modern Tiles - Bathroom tiles come in so many different shapes, designs and colors.  Add a modern look and feel to your bathroom by updating your shower tiles.  Not only are they durable and long lasting, they can really give your bathroom new life.

What to Keep Out of Your Garbage Disposal This Thanksgiving

Between inviting guests over for dinner, making your grocery shopping list, and food prep, it can be easy to push caring for your garbage disposal to the back of your mind.  However, many Thanksgiving foods are bad for your drain!  Prevent plumbing problems by keeping these Thanksgiving dishes out of your garbage disposal.

Be Careful With These Thanksgiving Foods:

  • Potatoes - Starchy vegetables like potatoes can expand in your garbage disposal system.  This can clog the drain and keep your garbage disposal blades from spinning.
  • Asparagus - Including asparagus in a side dish?  This stringy vegetable can wrap around the disposal blades and keep your system from working properly.
  • Turkey Bones - If you're cooking a whole turkey, be sure to keep any bones out of your drain.  It's a common myth that bones can go down your disposal.  However, bones are strong enough to bend and break your disposal blades.
  • Leftover Grease - Although grease may look like a liquid, you'll want to keep it far away from your kitchen sink.  When grease hardens, it can cause clogs in your plumbing drains and in your garbage disposal.  Be sure to dispose of any leftover grease from your turkey or other dish in the garbage.
If you're using a dishwasher this Thanksgiving, it's important to scrape off any leftover food.  In many cases, the dishwasher is directly linked to your garbage disposal.  Similarly, this can cause plumbing problems.

If you experience any problems with your garbage disposal this Thanksgiving, give us a call.  Our expert plumbing technicians can help clear your drain and leave you with a stress-free holiday.  Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office or visit our website to learn more about the plumbing and remodeling services that we offer to the Rochester area.

Cleaning Tips for Cold & Flu Season

Cleaning is no one's favorite chore.  However, keeping your home clean can help keep the doctor away as we head into cold and flu season.  These tips will help keep your home spotless and germ-free.

Cleaning Tips for Cold & Flu Season:

  • Disinfect Faucet Handles - You wash your hands to keep them clean, but you touch the faucet handle before you are able to wash them off.  Disinfect your faucet handles too during your cleaning routines.
  • Wash Your Pillow Case - You should wash your pillow case about once a week to help get rid of any germs that might have gotten onto your pillow.
  • Keep Humidifiers Clean - Humidifiers help make breathing easy, but they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.  Be sure to clean your humidifier regularly.
  • Wipe Down Door Handles - Your bathroom door handle, the door to your home, and your bedroom doors should be wiped down and disinfected.
  • Kitchen Cabinet Handles - Cabinet handles are another part of your home that is touched often.  Keep cabinet handles clean to help keep germs out of the kitchen.
  • Toilet Flushers - This one may seem obvious, but you should keep your toilet handle clean to prevent germs from spreading.  We don't wash our hands until after the toilet is flushed.

Party Tips for Your Labor Day Celebration

Happy Labor Day!  We hope you enjoy spending time off today as we appreciate those who work hard every day.  If you plan on spending time with friends and family BBQing and celebrating as we approach the end of summer, here are a few tips to make sure your Labor Day celebration goes smoothly.

Labor Day Party Tips:

  • Plan Your BBQ - Take the time to plan how much food you will need for your guests!  This will help prevent tons of leftovers.
  • Use Your Disposal Carefully - Garbage disposals are a great tool.  They help keep bits of food out of your plumbing!  However, be careful what you decide to put down your disposal.  Many BBQ foods like potato salad, corn, and bones from meats can damage your disposal blades.
  • Remind Guests to Drive Safely - Labor Day weekend is a big travel holiday.  If you have guests coming from a long distance, remind them to drive safely and carefully!
  • Watch What You Flush -When having guests over (especially small children), things can get flushed that aren't supposed to.  Make sure that only toilet paper and waste is being flushed down your toilet today.

Back-to-School Plumbing Tips

Back-to-school season is here!  Now that the kids will be spending more time in the bathroom getting ready in the morning - it's important that your plumbing system is in good condition.  Here are a few tips to help make the morning rush a little bit easier.

Plumbing Tips:
  • Fix Faucet Leaks - Even a small leak can put a lot of wear and tear on your bathroom faucet.  If you notice a leak now, you shouldn't delay getting it fixed.
  • Create a Shower Schedule - You should try saving most showers for at night to save time in the morning.  If you love morning showers, create a schedule!  This will help free up time in the bathroom for other people and help avoid hot water limits.  Of course, if you are looking for unlimited hot water, consider upgrading to a tankless water heater this fall.
  • Add Bath Mats - Avoid slip and falls when rushing around during your bathroom routines by adding bath mats to your floors and shower.  This will help prevent injuries when getting ready.
  • Add Strainers to Drains - Make sure that your bathroom sink and shower drains have strainers to catch hair and other debris.  While we do want our hair to look good for the first day of school, we don't want to clog our drains in the process.
We know that back-to-school is a busy time of year.  If you experience any problems with your home plumbing, our professional technicians will help get your system back up and running when you need it.  Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office!

How to Save Money On Your Water Heating Bill

We're always looking for ways to cut back on our home maintenance costs.  One way to do this (and it's often overlooked) is by making a few changes to your home water heater!  Here are a few ways to save on your water heating costs.

Money Saving Tips:

  • Insulate Your Water Heater - Even when your water heater is in use, it is still holding hot water and keeping it warm.  This can be a major source of energy loss if your tank is not well insulated!
  • Reduce Your Demand - The easiest and most obvious way to save money on your water heating bill is by using less hot water.  Check for faucet, shower head and other plumbing leaks to prevent hot water loss.
  • Insulate Your Pipes - Make sure that the water leaving your hot water heater stays warm as it makes it's way to your shower.  Insulate the hot water piping within the first 5-10 feet of your water heater for best results.

Do you have any questions about your water heater?  Looking to upgrade to a tankless water heater?  We're here to help! Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office!

Bathroom Storage Solutions for Your Remodel

Keeping a tiny bathroom organized can be tough - especially for busy families with kids on-the-go.  However, cleaning up your space can save you time and allow for some extra sleep in the morning.  Here are a few organizational tips to help you avoid a messy, frustrating bathroom.

De-Clutter Your Bathroom

  • Go Through Your Medicine Cabinet - Throw away any expired medications, old shampoos, and other unused toiletries that take up space for things you truly need.
  • Utilize Drawer Dividers - Dividers help keep your drawers compartmentalized.  You can keep makeup in a small, three-tiered plastic container on your counter - and anything you don't use should be stored away in a drawer.
  • Get An Over-the-Door Basket - Make the use of the backs of your cabinet doors!  This will help save space.  You can also invest in products that allow you to hang your hair dryers, curling irons and other products to the backs of your doors or walls, instead of having them tangled in a drawer.
  • Build Storage Into Your Bath -If your bathroom is due for a remodel, consider built-in storage solutions that help keep your small bathroom organized.  There are many ways to include hidden drawers, cabinets, and organizational dividers into your vanity and medicine cabinet.

If you are looking to remodel your bathroom, give us a call!  Our design experts will help you create a bathroom that meets your family's storage needs.  Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office for a consultation!

Why Should You Drain Your Water Heater?

Your water heater is an often overlooked part of your home, but just like any appliance, it needs regular maintenance in order to stay in good condition.

Your home's tap water is filled with sediments and minerals, such as calcium and lime.  Overtime, these particles can build in the bottom of your water heater tank. If these sediments aren't removed, they can cause your water heater to work harder and shorter the life span of your system,

By draining your water heater once a year, you can improve the energy efficiency of your water heater and save money in the long term!

If you have any questions about your home water heater, give us a call!  The professional plumbing technicians at AP Plumbing are always here to help you with any of your home plumbing needs.  Whether you need a new water heater installed, you need your system repaired, or it's time to perform seasonal water heater maintenance, our technicians are here to help.

What to Do If Your Toilet Overflows

An overflowing toilet is a sight that no homeowner wants to see. Fortunately, knowing what to do in an emergency can help you manage the problem quickly and avoid a messy cleanup.  These are the steps you should take if you find yourself with a toilet that is overflowing.

What to Do If Your Toilet Overflows:

  1. Turn Off the Water - There should be a water shut off valve near the base of your toilet.  Turning the valve will shut off the water running to your toilet bowl and will prevent any flooding.
  2. Clean Up Any Water - If there is any water on the floor, now is the time to clean it up. Use towels to soak up water and be sure to wash and disinfect the area!
  3. Clear the Clog - It is likely that your toilet bowl is overflowing due to a clog.  Use a toilet plunger to try to plunge the clog free.
If you are still having trouble, give us a call!  Our professional plumbing technicians can help you fix your overflowing toilet and clear any difficult clogs.  Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office or visit our website for more information on our plumbing and remodeling services.
