Plumbing FAQs

Have a question about your plumbing system?  You're not alone.  Take a look at a few of the most frequently asked plumbing questions.

Plumbing FAQs:

What Causes Clogged Drains?
Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing problems that homeowners face.  Most bathroom clogs are due to hair and soap clogging the drain pipes.  When this accumulates over time, it can keep the water from going down the drain.  Kitchen sinks are often clogged by oil and grease.  If you want to prevent these clogs, try to scrape food dishes before washing them in the sink.  Even small amounts of oil can clog your drain over time!

How Do I Turn Off Water to My House?
All of the water in your home is connected to your main water shut off valve.  It is likely that you will find this valve in your basement or crawl space below your house.

Why Should You Drain Your Water Heater?
Your water heater is an often overlooked part of your home, so how often do you need to perform maintenance on it?  You should drain your water heater once a year to improve the overall energy efficiency of your system.  Read more about when to drain your water heater here.

Why Should I Stay Away From Liquid Drain Cleaners?
Slow draining sinks can be frustrating, but liquid drain cleaners can damage your plumbing.  You should always give a professional plumber a call before purchasing a liquid drain cleaner.  Read more about why here.

How Can I Remodel On a Budget?
Bathroom and kitchen remodeling doesn't have to break the bank.  By updating your fixtures, keeping your plumbing in the same locations, and choosing decorations wisely, you can significantly reduce the cost of your remodel.  Read more about how to remodel on a budget here and give us a call for a consultation.  We'll always give you an estimate in writing for you to approve before we begin any work!

If you run into any of these common plumbing problems - or you don't see your plumbing problem above, give us a call!  Our technicians are here around the clock to help you with all of your plumbing needs.

Great Books for Read In The Bathtub Day

Having a rough start to your week?  There's no better way to unwind at the end of a long day than with a  good book and a relaxing bubble bath!

Today is National Read in the Bathtub Day!

Whether you're an avid reader or you're newly picking up the hobby, here are a few must-reads to add to your 2016 reading list.

Bathtub Reading Inspiration:

The Great Gatsby
More than a Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a tragic and heartbreaking story that has become one of the most quintessentially American novels.  It is a classic novel that tells the story of a young millionaire, growing up during the Roaring Twenties.

Are You There God?  It's Me, Margaret
This groundbreaking young adult novel by Judy Blume deals with the honest questions so many pre-teens wonder about.  Margaret asks God some questions to which there are no easy answers.  The book talks frankly about these issues, without being condescending.

Harry Potter
If you haven't read the Harry Potter series, there is no better time to start.  The books are perfect for adults and children of all ages - and you can really get lost in the story.  Just remember to keep an eye on the time (you don't want your fingers to get pruney)!

Divergent
The first in the series, Divergent is a story about a a society divided into factions.  Each of the factions uphold a specific virtue.  When you turn 16, you need to choose what faction you belong in.  For Beatrice, the decision lies between staying with her family or being in the faction she truly feels she belongs in.  Don't forget to check out the movies after you're done, too!

Fahrenheit 451
In this dystopian novel, books are forbidden.  It's Guy Montag's job to destroy all of the books and track down those who disobey.  Ray Bradbury's novel addresses themes of technology and a post-literate future.

The Kite Runner
This heartbreaking story tells the tale of an unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and a servant.  The novel addresses family, love and friendship in Afghanistan over the last thirty years.

How to Keep Your Bathroom Clean and Organized for the New Year

Everyone wants to start the year off with a clean slate - why not start (and end) each day off fresh too?  With a clean and organized bathroom, you can ease into your day without the chaos of looking for a lost hairbrush.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your bathroom organized and clean in 2016.

Bathroom Tips:

  • Go Through Your Medicine Cabinet - When was the last time you really went through your medicine cabinet?  It's time to get rid of outdated medicines and keep your medicine cabinet clean and organized with products that are useful to you in the new year.
  • Keep Hair Products Under Control - Hair products can take up a lot of space int he bathroom.  Keep your styling routine organized by storing all of your products in a plastic tub under the sink.  If you haven't used a product recently, it might be time to toss it!
  • Squeegee Often - After a long shower, water will sit on your shower curtain or shower glass doors.  This can lead to mold, mildew and hard water stains.  Stay on top of your cleaning routine by simply using a squeegee to wipe down your shower after each use.  This will help keep your bathroom clean and cut down on cleaning time when you do your bathroom cleaning each week.
  • Clean Your Grout - Grout is porous and can absorb oils from any products you use in the bathtub.  This includes shampoos, conditioners, and soaps.  Keep your shower tiles clean by cleaning the grout with a mixture of 10 parts water to 1 part bleach.  Just be sure to remove the bleach solution after you're done cleaning
  • Set a Schedule - Put a plan in place for 2016.  Once a month (or every other month) you should give your bathroom a thorough clean.  Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar to help keep your pipes clear of grease, oil and hair.
Check out this Martha Stewart article for more information on how to clean your bathroom.  If you're looking to really give your bathroom and overhaul this year with a remodel, give our office a call.  Our professionals will help you decide on the right bathroom design for your home needs.   Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office or visit our website to learn more about the plumbing and remodeling services that we offer to the Rochester area.

Celebrate National Bubble Bath Day!

It's National Bubble Bath Day!

Now that it's finally cold out, a nice, warm bubble bath is the perfect way to relax at the end of a long work week.  Here are a few ways to make your next bath a little bit more spa-like.

Play your favorite music. Listening to your favorite artist, radio station or song can be a great way to relax.  Add some tunes to your bath to make your bubble bath even more relaxing.  Of course, be sure to keep all electrical devices away from the tub.

Read a book.  If you have the time, sit down and read a book while you soak in the bubble bath.  Just try not to get it wet!

Add essential oils.  Lavender, eucalyptus and rose oil are known for their relaxing scents.  Add a few drops to your bath to make your bathroom smell great!

Use a bath pillow.  Inflatable bath pillows or pillows mad from soft fabric can help you rest your neck while you bath.  If you don't have a pillow on-hand, use a cotton bath towel folded up instead.

Ready to give your bathroom a makeover this year?  We can help you remodel your bathroom for your family's needs (and so that you can enjoy a relaxing bubble bath)!

Bathroom Remodeling Trends for the New Year

Is your bathroom due for a remodel?

Whether your bathroom is old and outdated or you're simply looking to give your space a new look, our bathroom remodeling experts are here to help.

As you start to think about your design plans and what style will work best for your space, here are a few remodeling trends to look out for in the New Year.

Bathroom Remodeling Trends for 2016:

  • Glass Shower Doors - One of the best ways to improve the appearance and functionality of your bathroom is by upgrading from shower curtains to shower doors.  Not only are they easier to clean, but shower doors can also open up your space and make it appear bigger.  Shower glass lets in light, while still allowing privacy.  Choose from a number of shower glass designs that offer obscurity and beauty.
  • Walk-In Tubs or Showers - With so many parents looking to age in place, walk in tubs and showers are growing in popularity.  Not only are they easier to access, but because they are so desirable, they can also improve the resale value of your home.
  • Metallics - A simple hardware update is a great way to update the appearance of your bathroom.  Metal faucets, handles, and shower heads in brass and copper tones are becoming popular in the bathroom.
  • Modern Tiles - Bathroom tiles come in so many different shapes, designs and colors.  Add a modern look and feel to your bathroom by updating your shower tiles.  Not only are they durable and long lasting, they can really give your bathroom new life.

  • Scented Pantry Soaps - Freshly scented soaps can be the perfect bath and spa gift for anyone in your family.  They are the gift of comfort and relaxation!  Opt for aromatherapy blends for an added sense of spa-like luxury.  If you prefer the DIY route, try this method and make your own!
  • Bath Tub Teas - Fill a few seal-able tea bags with calming scents.  You can then add these next time you're looking to take a relaxing evening bath.  Use scents like lavender buds, peppermint leaves and chamomile buds for the perfect spa gift.
  • Body Scrubs - Body scrubs are a great way to make your skin feel fresh again.  They moisturize and exfoliate at the same time!  Purchase a few as a gift or make your own body scrub here.

How to Prep Your Bathroom for Holiday Guests

Holiday guests often mean more bathroom traffic.  Before you invite friends, family and loved ones over to celebrate, you'll want to prep your bathroom for your weekend visitors.

These tips will help keep your guest bathroom running smoothly through the holiday season.

Bathroom Prep Tips:

  • Have Hand Sanitizer On Hand - Leave hand sanitizer in plain sight, so that your guests will be reminded to put some one before they leave the bathroom.
  • Light a Festive Candle - There are so many festive candle scents available.  They help give your bathroom a holiday feel, and the soft light helps make the space a little bit more welcoming.  Some candles even contain germ-busing essential oils like Eucalyptus that will help ensure your holiday guests don't bring any winter colds into your home!
  • Keep Hand Towels Nearby - Keep fresh hand towels near the sink for your guests.  If you want, sprinkle them with lavender, peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil to keep your bathroom smelling fresh.
  • Clean the Bathroom Beforehand - Give your bathroom a thorough clean before your guests come over.  This will help prevent germs from spreading and keep your bathroom looking impressive to holiday guests.
  • Prep Your Vanity - Add small bathroom essentials to your vanity.  Guests may have forgotten to pack cotton balls, toothpaste, a toothbrush or even a razor.  This is a great way to make your guests feel at home!

If you run into any problems with your bathroom this holiday season, we encourage you to contact our office.  Call 585-216-3058 or visit our website to learn more about the plumbing and remodeling services that we offer to the Rochester area.

How to Celebrate Bathtub Day

What is your favorite way to relax?

  • Read a Book - What better way to truly escape than by reading a book in the bathtub?  Just don't get it wet!
  • Add Bubbles - Bubble baths aren't just for kids.  They can also be a way to soak at the end of the day and ease tension and worries.
  • Light Candles - Scented candles can help your bathroom truly feel like a spa.
  • Enjoy the Silence - Sometimes silence can give a sense of solitude and peace.

Bathroom Storage Solutions for Your Remodel

Keeping a tiny bathroom organized can be tough - especially for busy families with kids on-the-go.  However, cleaning up your space can save you time and allow for some extra sleep in the morning.  Here are a few organizational tips to help you avoid a messy, frustrating bathroom.

De-Clutter Your Bathroom

  • Go Through Your Medicine Cabinet - Throw away any expired medications, old shampoos, and other unused toiletries that take up space for things you truly need.
  • Utilize Drawer Dividers - Dividers help keep your drawers compartmentalized.  You can keep makeup in a small, three-tiered plastic container on your counter - and anything you don't use should be stored away in a drawer.
  • Get An Over-the-Door Basket - Make the use of the backs of your cabinet doors!  This will help save space.  You can also invest in products that allow you to hang your hair dryers, curling irons and other products to the backs of your doors or walls, instead of having them tangled in a drawer.
  • Build Storage Into Your Bath -If your bathroom is due for a remodel, consider built-in storage solutions that help keep your small bathroom organized.  There are many ways to include hidden drawers, cabinets, and organizational dividers into your vanity and medicine cabinet.

If you are looking to remodel your bathroom, give us a call!  Our design experts will help you create a bathroom that meets your family's storage needs.  Call 585-216-3058 to contact our office for a consultation!

Summer Bathroom Remodeling

Ready to make some summer updates to your home?  Why not start with your bathroom!  The bathroom is one of the most utilized rooms in your home - it should be comfortable too.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind during your bathroom remodel.

Bathroom Remodeling Tips:

  • Update Fixtures - Your bathroom fixtures can play a big role in the design and overall appearance of your bathroom.
  • Try Out Your Bathtub - Sit in the bathtub before you buy it.  This will help give you a better idea of whether it is the right size for you what you and your family need.
  • Choose a Durable Floor Material - Your bathroom floor should be durable and water-resistant.  Choose a flooring option that can withstand against daily traffic.
  • Invest in a Quality Toilet - While it's not necessary to spend a lot of money on your new toilet, you want something that is going to last and is comfortable.
Check out this article from MSN for more tips to keep in mind before remodeling your bathroom this year.

How to Remodel Your Bathroom on a Budget

Is your bathroom old and outdated?  This summer is the perfect time to remodel!  These tips will help you update your bathroom on a budget.

Budget Remodeling Tips:

  • Update Your Lighting - Replacing the light fixtures in your bathroom can change the entire mood of the space. It can brighten a bathroom and create a more modern look and feel.
  • Update Existing Fixtures - Rather than investing in an entirely new bathroom, you can update old fixtures to give them a new look.  For example, you can add molding and shelves to your bathroom for a new look.
  • Add New Paint - Refresh your bathroom paint with a new, clean color.  Update you accessories to match and you have an entirely new look for your bathroom!
  • Upgrade Water-Efficiency - Many new shower heads, faucets, and toilets use water more efficiently.  This save you money on your utility bills and creates a new bathroom that is more eco-friendly.

Tub to Shower Conversions - A Gift for Moms Aging in Place

Mother's Day is a time for showing your Mom how much you appreciate everything that she has done.  For those with Mothers who are looking to age in place, a tub to shower conversion can be a unique gift that offers comfort, safety, and security.  Here are a few of the benefits a tub to shower conversion can offer your Mom's home.

Shower Conversion Benefits:

  • Increase in Value - Showers can improve the resale value of your home, as well as improve the appearance of a bathroom with an older, outdated tub.
  • Easier on Joints - Showers eliminate the need to step in and out of a bathtub.  This is easier on aging joints!
  • Reduced Slip and Fall Risk - Since you no longer need to step over a ledge to get into the tub, you also reduce your risk of a slip and fall.  We can even install safety grab bars to help improve the safety of your bathroom.
